Who: Chiropractor Har Hari Khalsa from Sat Hari Chiropractic in West Los Angeles.
Quick take: Dr. Khalsa specializes in Body Restoration Technique (BRT), a detoxifying method developed by Eric Berg, D.C., a chiropractor in the Washington, D.C., area. Practitioners claim that BRT corrects imbalances in the endocrine system without hormones or medication. Dr. Har Hari, as his patients call him, is one of only a handful of practitioners in the state.
The process: The technique uses the acupuncture points of the body to find and root out chemicals or toxins that may be blocking communication between the body’s glands and its brain. “We’re exposed to thousands of chemicals throughout our lives. BRT is a way of clearing those out of the endocrine system,” explains Dr. Khalsa.
The technique places vials of what the doctor calls “endocrine disruptors” (substances that are likely to cause problems in the endocrine system) in different areas of the body. As in an allergy test, where exposure to different allergens will make the area react, the theory is that the energy of the body will let the doctor know where the blockage is and what may be causing it. Dr. Khalsa then works with the body’s energy using low-level vibration on the blocked areas, allowing the glands to release toxins so the body can eliminate them through the urine. The complete detoxification usually takes more than one session.
What you don’t know can hurt you: Imbalances or malfunctions of the endocrine system, especially of the thyroid, are more common than we think. Because the symptoms of an imbalance can mimic a variety of illnesses, many people don’t realize they have it. However, hormonal imbalances, says Dr. Khalsa, can be the cause of common problems like anxiety, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, PMS and depression.
The happiest place in alternative medicine: Dr. Khalsa loves technology, and it shows. The treatment room is equipped to provide magnetic field, laser, light and color therapy. There are also chiropractic services and massage therapy, including self-heating, infrared acupressure tables. Glenn Frazin, a medical intuitive who works closely with Dr. Khalsa, describes the clinic as “the Disneyland of bio-energetic medicine.”
Most of the therapies are useful for pain management and stress reduction, but their primary function is to support the results of the BRT detoxification process, the cornerstone of Dr. Khalsa’s practice.
Personal file: Dr. Khalsa, who has practiced for more than 20 years, is a native of Southern California. He lives with his wife, three children, three cats and one “extraordinarily rambunctious” dog called Jasper.
