Astrology of a President

What lies ahead in Bush’s chart?

by Elliot Jay Tanzer

Using astrology to explain why something happened is always easier than predicting what will happen, especially in a presidential election. There are so many factors to consider, including the charts of the candidates, their running mates, the two parties and even the charts of the candidates’ wives.

The art of prediction is based on probability theory: the fact that something that has happened many times coinciding with certain factors is likely to happen again when those factors repeat. For example, during the Egyptian empire, the Nile River flooded during a certain season for thousands of years, causing many to identify a seasonal pattern. However, when for several years the Nile River didn’t flood and the Sphinx was buried up to its neck in sand, it is very likely the court astrologer/astronomers were executed for their false prophesy. Fortunately, modern astrologers do not have to fear execution for making incorrect election predictions.

Factors to Consider

Astrologically, it has been observed that many presidents were elected when Saturn transited through the top of their birth charts. This was true for Kennedy, Nixon, Carter and Reagan. In the 2000 election, both Bush and Gore had Saturn transiting through their Mid-Heaven. At the time of that election, Mercury, the planet of the mind, was Retrograding back and forth between zodiac signs, so the contest was neck and neck.

Bush vs. Kerry

Many astrologers weighing in on the 2004 election favored a Kerry win, as Kerry’s Saturn is headed for the top of the chart, while Bush’s Saturn is already in the 12th House, symbolizing the end of a cycle. This is the pattern that coincided with Kennedy’s assassination, Nixon’s resignation, Carter’s hostage problem and Reagan’s Iran Contra scandal. In addition, Saturn was traveling over Bush’s Cancer Sun sign in June, and through December 9, Bush is in the middle of his Second Saturn Return — the ending of cycles and a time of karmic return with implications of frustration, delays, hard luck and the likelihood of defeat.

However, Saturn, with its conservative and regressive inclinations, is also going over the July 4 Cancer Sun sign of the United States, equaling the same frustration, delays, hard luck and likelihood of defeat for the country.

One astrologer predicted a Bush victory based on a single indicator. He observed that on Election Day, the Moon would be in the sign of Cancer next to both the US’s and Bush’s Cancer Sun sign, thus favoring a patriarchal and conservative candidate motivated by an emotional public’s concern for security. Apparently he was correct.

The Lord of Karmic Return

Saturn’s heavy handedness is not as the Grim Reaper with nothing better to do. Saturn is actually the Great Teacher who comes to reveal the karma of our actions while testing our faith and willingness to do what is right even under harsh circumstances.

Recall the story of pious Job being tested by Saturn (known in Hebrew astrology as Sa-tan, meaning tester or opposer). In astrology, the planets are not planets, per se, but are rather descriptive of energies within each of us. Saturn is the energy within us that urges us to confront our individual patterns of self-undoing and motivates us to use personal power responsibly.

Using probability theory to predict the outcome of events that occur when Saturn transits over an individual or a country’s Sun sign would indicate that anything that begins during a difficult Saturn transit usually ends with one having to confront the consequences of negative actions. Though we may pray for the president to become enlightened to the needs of the people and the environment — and not just to the needs of big business and a fundamentalist constituency — Bush’s win may turn out to become his personal defeat.

As Mercury Retrograding back and forth described the 2000 election, this time it was Saturn, the planet of karma, slowing on November 2 that affected the election’s outcome. As Saturn Retrogrades, it is likely that we will see an unraveling of major proportions of the Bush facade, and he will be trapped in his own deceptions.

Unfortunately, Transiting Pluto continues to activate the warrior energy of Mars in the Natal U.S. chart, so regardless of who won the election, the war will continue in Iraq.

But there is one positive note — on Election Day both Venus and Jupiter were the Morning Stars shining brightly in the pre-dawn sky. Rising as they were on such a significant day, we can hope they bode well for the uplifting of all humankind.

Dubya’s Chart

George W. Bush was born with his Sun in the affable sign of Cancer, located in the 12th House, with Leo Rising and a Libra Moon. Although Cancer Sun sign individuals are often shy and insecure in public, Leo as a Rising sign demands to be the center of attention. The Sun in the 12th House often gives the president a wide-eyed innocent look which can either mask deception or reveal purity of heart. Being very sensitive, it is not uncommon for 12th House Sun signs to escape into alcohol or religion. The archetype of the 12th House Sun sign ideally is that of the savior-type. Its distortion, especially with Leo Rising, is described as a Messianic Complex.

All Bush’s planets are located within 120º, indicating a very easy life with Jupiter, Venus, Pluto and Uranus connected beneficially for wealth, power and fame. However, Pluto in the 1st House, though representing power, also represents emotional explosiveness and confrontations with the dark side, indicating that what may be referred to as a brutal, dictatorial past life will come back to haunt him.
