Praising Peace, Inciting Passion
In your December letter from the editor, you write about the Palestinian who donated the organs of his son, killed by the Israelis who mistook his plastic gun for a real gun, to Israelis in need of transplants. If most Palestinians were like him, there would be no Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
For your information, Israeli physicians have saved thousands of Palestinian lives. This did not prevent the suicide bombers from killing them. Have you heard about a female Palestinian who was cured by a physician in an Israeli hospital and was caught on her way to blow up the very hospital where she was treated? I bet you have not featured her in your magazine. —Lilly Gottlieb, LA
The Vegan Food Chain
Thank you for the excellent write up on the dining experience of Madeline Bistro. I have dined there a dozen times since they opened in May and I am pleased to see your publication feature Dave and Molly Anderson’s creative cuisine so completely and positively.
As a vegan for the better part of the past 18 years I do, however, take offense to you calling Ann Gentry “Vegan Godmother.” Ann is not a vegan, and although I enjoy her restaurants, I do not perceive her as a woman who walks her talk.
Thanks for the great publication—I have been a reader for many years.
—Evelyn Gray, West Hollywood
Ann Gentry responds: While I may not always adhere to a strict, vegan lifestyle, my diet is primarily vegan and I strive to make vegan cuisine accessible to everyone through my restaurants and my cookbook. I’ve tried to move the movement forward in Southern California and the nation. That’s always been my intention.
