WLT, Easy on the Eyes

What a beautiful and substantive magazine you have created out of an already great magazine! A professional, artsy feel—and the information is nicely broken up into digestible pieces—visually as well as the text/content. A work of art indeed! Good work. —KRS Edstrom, Toluca Lake

First, congrats on the makeover—it looks terrific. (I don’t want to be a spoilsport, but if it were possible to darken and increase the font size, I would not complain.)

I have been meaning to write but just hadn’t, but when I read about Harriet, the 176-year-old tortoise (8/06, From the Editor), the “fishy” salmon that is farmed but labeled wild (8/06 Mindful Living), and Margaret Mead’s familiar quote, I had to.

I remember hearing about Harriet and thought, my God, that is amazing. I read Consumer Reports and I loved Mead’s biography by Jane Howard. I am grateful to have WLT here in LA where we can claim her as our own.

Just wanted to let you know that I love the new format of WLT. I’ve been picking up a copy to read for years, but have never made it through an entire issue because, when I laid out the magazine on the table, I had to keep stretching my neck forward to read things at the top of the pages. So, due to fatigue, I would give up halfway through.

But when this new size came out, I read through an entire issue for the first time! I didn’t know how many great articles I was missing before. I just LOVE this size and format!!

I know someone had written in last month about the ink being a little too light. My eyes are going on me, too. So far, I can read it ok with my glasses on, but I think it might be a good idea to darken the print just a little bit.
—Diane Eardley, LA

A reader wrote in and said that the new format of your magazine is difficult to read because of the pale small print. I, too, cannot see it well, so I just skim through your magazine now. I seldom read any of the articles because it’s too much of a strain on my eyes.
—Brandy Hall, Costa Mesa

Ed. reply: Thanks to all who wrote or called in about the print size. We’re in the process of choosing a new larger, darker font, so stick with us—we’ll be easier on the eyes as early as next month.

Stay Practical

I have been reading your magazine for about a year now and have found it very refreshing. I seek it out every month. I like the new look and square binding.

However, I found the new issue to be a little too spiritual and lacking in practicality. For example, I would rather read articles on how I can make this world a better place and what I can do to improve my life and those around me. While I understand that many of your readers practice yoga and meditation, I believe that over-emphasis on these topics will marginalize the readers who do not. You run the risk of not being taken seriously by a lot of not-so-in-tune readers. Once you get the “liberal kook” label, it is hard to get rid of.

Please keep your articles practical. This does not mean you have to avoid the topics of yoga, Zen and so on, but your objective should be to try to pull in more mainstream readers and not marginalize them. —Phil, via Internet
