Gandhi Hits Hollwood

by Dawna Shuman

The war in Iraq marches on but Hollywood stopped for peace last Oct. 28 when Arun Gandhi, Mahatama Gandhi’s 70-year-old grandson, led the inaugural Parade for World Peace down Hollywood Boulevard. Gandhi addressed the crowd of nearly 3,000, quoting from his grandfather’s lessons of peaceful activism, before immortalizing his historic first step on the famous street by placing his foot in a plaster panel in Walk of Fame tradition. Gandhi hopes it will be the first step in a “global peace parade.”

Three thousand peace-loving marchers joined Gandhi, along with actors Mike Farrell, Daryl Hannah, David Arquette, Sally Kirkland, Mimi Kennedy, Katey Sagal and LeVar Burton. Singer Joanelle Romero (Red Nation), Christine Chavez (granddaughter of Cesar Chavez) and Peace Mom Cindy Sheehan also joined the march organized by KTLK journalist Harrison (Harrison on the Edge) and ANSWER (Act Now to Stop the War and End Racism).
