Down To Earth

LA arts collective Create: Fixate returns to the original muse — nature herself

by Lucinda Michele Knapp

The arts community has always been quick to pile on the eco bandwagon, often far before the general public. What’s surprising about Create:Fixate is that it’s an earth conscious arts collective hailing from a place where clean air and thriving ecosystems seem distant: the urban core of LA.

“A guest would turn down a dark desolate street, pull up a block, and there was an industrial building pumping with music and light, as bright as any gallery,” says Create:Fixate’s founder, Michelle Berc. “I like saying Create:Fixate is a mini museum of emerging and mid-career artists with music thrown in the mix. It’s an art gallery meets nightclub meets bar… the vibe is constantly changing as we rotate the DJ’s and live bands. Each event takes on its own character as we explore different artists and different types of music. It’s always fresh.”

Create:Fixate has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 2001, when Michelle, frustrated with traditional galleries, held her first “art party” at her own loft in Downtown. Now the massive events provide an entrée into the world of art for both artists and neophyte collectors. “There has been as many first time art sales for artists as first time art collectors,” says Berc.

This Earth Day weekend, Create:Fixate erupts in a greener version of its usual riot of lush color and sound, with an April 21st event entitled “Down To Earth.” Many LA artists already use recycled or repurposed materials in their work, but Down To Earth takes that trend one step further: Each artist has been tasked to create a piece that communicates a message of earth stewardship and incorporates a recycled material.

As part of the shifting parade of sights and sounds that accompany a Create:Fixate event, an artist-activist who’s one of only a thousand trained to show Al Gore’s epic slide show An Inconvenient Truth will screen the award-winning presentation early in the evening.

Sponsored by Whole Life Times, with organizations like Green World Campaign, The Coalition for Clean Air, Tree People and Lovecraft Bio-Fuels involved in the show, it’s an evening that’ll be as galvanizing as it is fun. Says Michelle, “Art is a perfect way to stimulate people to take action.”
