Don’t just get mad... get active
If you’re one of the 16 million-plus people who practice yoga in the U.S., you’re already aware that this ancient tradition is great for calming the mind as well as toning the body. Many people use yoga to feel better about themselves, but there’s another aspect of the practice that’s beneficial to others. Selfless service, called seva in Sanskrit — a word meaning “string,” implying that all things are connected in the thread of existence — is a way to keep your ego in check while making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
Seva Foundation, a 30-year-old Berkeley-based organization, helps underserved people around the world with community self-development, affordable eye care and other programs. Donate time, money, or even frequent flier miles at seva.org.
Off the Mat, Into the World is a program started by well-known yoginis Seane Corn and Hala Khouri and devotional musician Suzanne Sterling. OTM joins yogic principles with conscious activism to benefit the community as a whole. offthematintotheworld.org.
