To outsiders, this world of revelry may seem foreign, but to us, this is a place we call home. This year, our chosen family reunion reached 13,000.
We are a close-knit community of music appreciators who cherish our time together, whether the dance floor is deep in desert dirt or on a polished nightclub floor. No matter what the weather, we always make time to celebrate the annual Lightning in a Bottle festival — the first green event of its kind that uses solar power and offers free filtered water.
The reunion occurred again at Oak Canyon Ranch in Silverado, California from May 27 to 30. We experienced what we had anticipated — nonstop laughter, amazing art installations, playful performers, outdoor yoga, interactive exhibits, speakers series, and areas of endless entertainment for all ages.
The festival, synonymous with the names of world-renowned DJs, packed a punch for those looking to lose themselves in the music and find new connections, both within and without. Lee Burridge from the UK took to the decks for a pumping sunset set, while LA-based John Kelley lit up the night at the Woogie Stage, created by local LA favorites Sammy Bliss and Jessie Wright. It was difficult to leave Woogie, but there were many acts to catch at the main stage, which featured Pretty Lights, Thievery Corporation and Beats Antique.
While music fulfilled the air element, there was much to be experienced upon the earth. Taking a yoga class with Shiva Rea, sharing A Day of Transformation with author Don Jose Ruiz and participating in a family workshop were just a few special offerings on the schedule. It is also a joy to see so many children having a wonderful time.
Reconnecting with mother Earth and our chosen family really brings you back to what matters… you.
