Across the United States, 60 cities and counties have banned pet store sales of commercially bred puppies in an effort to support adoption and shut down puppy mills that neglect and abuse animals. A federal judge in Phoenix recently dismissed a pet store’s challenge to a 2013 citywide ban, even though the store claimed it worked with only ethical breeders.
Sadly, pets of all kinds end up in shelters, and many are abandoned purebreds.
Puppy mill sales are banned in the city of Beverly Hills, and there are more than 50 puppy friendly pet stores throughout the greater L.A. area that have signed the Humane Society pledge. Look for the sign in the window—”We love puppies; that’s why we don’t sell them”—that indicates the store has made the commitment. Or find a Southland vendor here.
Some vendors and dog lovers object to unilateral bans, claiming they unfairly exclude responsible breeders. What do you think?
