The FDA has cleared the way for DNA-modified salmon (GMO) to hit the shelves of our food markets with no special labeling. This is the first time GMO fish have been approved for human consumption. They say it is as safe for humans as farmed salmon. Even if you believe this to be true, considering the hazards of farmed salmon—viruses, saturated fat, disease, antibiotics, sea lice, 11 times more dioxin than wild salmon—it’s not much of an endorsement.
The fish they genetically modified are essentially Atlantic salmon with a Pacific salmon gene added to make them grow faster and year round, reports Reuters, adding that, “Activist group Friends of the Earth estimates that at least 35 other species of genetically engineered fish, along with chickens, pigs and cows, are under development. The FDA’s decision on salmon may set a precedent that could make approval for other genetically modified animal species easier.”
