The Hungry Heart ~ A Woman’s Fast for Justice is Zoe’s actual diary of her 45 day event leading up to the June 30, 1982 deadline for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. With only the exception of spelling and grammar edits, this is her authentic journal with photographs, mostly taken by her late friend, Judy Rosenfeld.

Excerpt from The Hungry Heart, Springfield Illinois ~

It was a quiet moment. It was a fantastic moment. It was heart. It was my heart joining with every other woman’s heart. Even women who are afraid of being equal, even women who are afraid of self-reliance, all women. Women in overalls. Women in aprons. Women in the Olympics. Women in the fields. Our singing swirled around this round proud ceiling and filled the heart of the Mother Goddess Spirit.

We walked the fifty feet to the east Capitol steps and looked out the door; a gigantic wave of light and energy crashed and poured over us. Five thousand women in a sea of green and white stood in front of us, cheering us, clapping for us. They were singing and chanting and deserving equality of rights under the law.

SECOND EDITION of The Hungry Heart needed.

A few weeks ago I had to turn down a large order of The Hungry Heart, A Woman’s Fast for Justice for a college’s Fall semester. With fewer than 100 left, I needed to print more. I thought, how about a SECOND EDITION? Of course, I dreamed of it, making lists in my mind of what it might include.

The timing could not be better as the ERA is ALIVE. Most of the last 36 years, I thought this would never happen. June 30, 1982 ended the public campaign for the ERA. The most strident believers tightened their grip on the amendment and the larger numbers dispersed. (Miss Paul never gave up in all her 92 years.)

Two extraordinary things turned the tide.
1) A stubborn movement began to collect to legally remove the deadline. It is the alternative going back to zero and starting the ratification entirely. Plus, it would retain the 35 states that ratified before the deadline.
2) March 21, 2017, Nevada burst the inertia, voted on the ERA, becoming state #36. Illinois voted yes, becoming #37 in May, 2018.

The SECOND EDITION of the Hungry Heart came into focus.

Amazing to know that my book, The Hungry Heart, A Woman’s Fast for Justice, is the only published firsthand account of what happened the summer of 1982. In size and format it is the “sister” piece to Doris Stevens, Jailed for Freedom. Doris and I are speaking from personal experience on each of our perspective “waves.” Doris on the 19th Amendment and mine on the ERA.

Adding a miracle to this timing is my 2018 application to the PBS Series, We’ll Meet Again with Ann Curry. I had asked for all six of the living fasters to be reunited. After a juried process, they chose my story but I had to choose only one for my reunion. Of course, I chose Sonia Johnson.

I had no idea where she was, if she was alive or if she would want to see me. Early last August I spent 14 days with a film crew beginning with a thrilling return to the Springfield, Illinois, Statehouse Rotunda. (May 29, Illinois ratified the ERA). The two week shoot ended with meeting Sonia and sitting together on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga.

Risks and challenges

Kickstarter is always a risk. It is an all or nothing funding source but it is the best platform, offers greater exposure and is the preferred fundraising vehicle of many entrepreneurs, artists and authors. All of my books and projects have been supported through Kickstarter.

The greatest risk is that it might disappear from Women’s History all together.
